This central figures are from a work by German artist Charlotte Salomon. Sadly, she did not survive the fire. Her work, however, lives on.
An excerpt from Wikipedia about the artist: Charlotte Salomon (April 16, 1917 – October 10, 1943) was a German-Jewishartist born in Berlin. She is primarily remembered as the creator of an autobiographical series of paintings Leben? oder Theater?: EinSingspielconsisting of 769 individual works painted between 1941 and 1943 in the south of France, while Salomon was in hiding from the Nazis. In October 1943 she was captured and deported to Auschwitz, where she and her unborn child were gassed to death soon after her arrival.
I amassed an extensive Nancy Drew Mystery collection in my childhood, thanks to my mom. When I saved enough money to buy a book, she matched the purchase price so I always got two! I'm left with wonderful memories of painstakingly choosing the new books.
